Project 2 Proposal 

Analyzing: Titanic: The movie 
Research Question: “Is it accurate?” 
Do the historical events/culture portrayed in the 1997 Titanic movie accurately reflect the real historical event of the Titanic sinking?
Although the historical event of the Titanic sinking was real and traumatic, the movie spun the tragedy into a romantic and love-struck film. I selected my research question based on the proposed argument that the Titanic movie did not accurately represent the trauma and horror that the passengers aboard the R.M.S Titanic endured. These oppositions to the movie have raised questions regarding the historical accuracy of the movie and whether or not Hollywood had “over modernized” the real event. However, despite opposition, the film still demonstrated many moments where social class, women’s rights and tragedy were evident. I chose to focus on the movie Titanic for my second project as social class and women’s rights are still pressing issues throughout the last century. I have watched and marveled at this movie for years and have always wondered if the depictions of upper class domination and women’s traditional roles were as accurate as the movie portrayed it to be. As a woman passionate for the rights of women throughout time, I am excited to analyze the historical relevance of this Academy-Award winning film. Personally, I am thrilled to work with a form of romantic fiction as romance is my favorite sub-genre. Through focusing on the historical accuracy, I will be able to compare the traditional roles of women portrayed in the titanic to the real roles and rights of women during the historical era of the early 1900’s. Through analyzing and comparing different peer-reviewed sources, I hope to successfully answer my research question regarding the historical accuracy of the Titanic movie.
